Queenstown Food Guide

Queenstown, New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Not only is it the adventure capital of New Zealand, it is also home to a myriad of delicious eating options. I spent 5 days of my winter holiday there with my family and we went paragliding, skiings, biking and kayaking.





The cold weather, combined with the thrilling adventure activities really worked up our appetites and made us really hungry every day. Luckily, Queenstown has a great dining culture, so we were was able to eat well after a tiring day out in the cold.

Here are my top recommendations for eating out in Queenstown, these are places really worth going, even if it is just to eat.


Fishbone




Fishbone knows and respects their fish. Fishbone's menu changes daily, depending on the market and ingredient availability.  The result? Fresh, sustainable seafood cooked to perfection. Their flounder with brown butter and capers is absolutely divine. Fish and chips are top standard. If you only go to one restaurant in Queenstown, make this the one.

The Sherwood, at The Sherwood hotel







The Sherwood is kind of magical. Located on the alpine hillsides, it looks and feels like an enchanted campsite haunted by a woodland spirit with a wellness/yoga retreat. Does that sound kind of strange?
I don't know, but the thing is, the moment you enter the Sherwood grounds, you feel a strange sense of connection with nature and yourself. The Sherwood is dedicated cooking with to local, organic, seasonal ingredients. I went there for a early morning breakfast and the experience was pretty extraordinary. Candle lights, soft jazz music and sheepskins on rustic wooden chairs. Everything was seasonal, homegrown and made from scratch. From the peanut butter (hand crushed mixed with coconut oil and local honey), to their poached tamarillos and their baked beans. Mainstream breakfast items are elevated to a whole new level, yet everything still remains  simple and nourishing.

Minami Jujisei

Minami Jujisei has been around for a long time (28 years!) and for good reason too. Japanese owned and run, Minami Jujisei is a reliable establishment dedicated to quality, authenticity and high standards of japanese cuisine. Tip: Nothing beats a big bowl of the nabe mono (Japanese style hotpot) on a cold wintery night, especially after day out in the mountains skiing.

Bespoke Kitchen and Vudu Cafe

Bespoke Kitchen won the  New Zealand Supreme Cafe of the Year for 2016. Vudu cafe is Bespoke kitchen's sister cafe. You'll find an impressive cabinet food selection, decent brunch menu and great coffee in both cafes. Their almond croissants are insanely good. It's a very nice cafe, and you'll be able to have a good breakfast there to fuel your action-packed day in Queenstown.

Torro




Spanish-inspired tapas dishes in a contemporary, cosy modern setting. Although the dishes are not authentic, they ingredients are local, fresh and very high quality and the taste is superb. Everything on the menu is worth trying, but I insist you order the grilled mushrooms, fried egg, truffle, calvo nero and migas and their paprika calamari with aioli. The patatas bravas is a bit disappointing though, it lacked the crunch and spice we normally expect from the typical dish.

If you ever visit New Zealand, visiting Queenstown is a must. I had great fun and it was such a bonus to eat so much delicious food as well.
